  3. There are some remarkable movies up for Best Picture this year. The betting favorites are established, but at this point, it's anyone's guess which film will win. Let's take a look at some of the candidates. 2019 Best Picture Betting Odds. As usual, eight movies were nominated for Best Picture this year.

2019 Best Picture Betting Odds

As usual, eight movies were nominated for Best Picture this year. I'll be breaking down the nominated films into two different categories.

I should note that the Oscar winners are notoriously hard to predict. The odds here provided by Bovada Sportsbook look accurate, yet bettors have a real shot at earning some money betting on the upset.

The Betting Favorites

Roma: -180

Roma is just the 11th foreign film in the history of the Academy Awards to be nominated for Best Picture. It's also the first film released through a streaming service to earn the nomination. This movie has been universally praised by critics and is now the betting favorite to win the 2019 Best Picture award.

Roma was directed by Alfonso Cuaron and centers around a middle-class family living in Mexico City during the early 70's. The Academy clearly loves this film. It's tied with The Favourite for the most overall nominations this year and has been called a 'masterpiece' by critics around the world.

Despite all its accolades, I'm a little surprised to see Roma listed as the favorite. The film was primarily released through Netflix and is a 135-minute black and white film. Artistic films like Roma tend to do good with the Academy though, and it wouldn't shock me to see it win Best Picture.

Green Book: +350

Green book is another film that's high in the 2019 Oscar betting odds for Best Picture this year. Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali are both terrific in this movie about a talented black pianist traveling through the south in the 1960's with a struggling nightclub bouncer. The film has an 82% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was named best film of the year by the National Board of Review.

Green Book has fallen under some controversy since hitting the big screens. The academy is known to steer away from films attached to negative press, and for that reason, they might be facing an uphill battle to earn the Best Picture award.

I still feel confident this move has a good chance at winning. It was pretty much universally praised by critics around the world and Mahershala Ali is perhaps the best actor in Hollywood right now. With current odds of +350, this movie might be a bet worth taking.

The Favourite: +900

The Favourite may not have been a massive box-office success, but it was applauded by critics and is now one of the betting favorites to win Best Picture at the 2019 Oscars. This movie stars Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz as two cousins vying to become the next Queen of Britain.

This movie only recently opened as one of the favorites in the 2019 Oscar betting odds set by Bovada Sportsbook. It currently holds a 94% approval rating by Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.9 rating on IMDB.

Time-period films like this one often do well at the Academy Awards. The Favourite checks off all the boxes to win Best Picture and was a true breakout for director Yorgos Lanthimos. The odds are currently listed at +900.

The Underdogs

Best Picture Betting Odds 2019 Nfl

Bohemian Rhapsody: +1800

This movie has been a surprising winner for some of the film industry's most prestigious awards this year. Most of the praise for this movie is given to lead actor Rami Malek, who managed to look and act remarkably like Freddie Mercury on screen. Having a soundtrack of Queen's biggest hits certainly doesn't hurt, either.

Director Bryan Singer was the subject of criticism during the production of Bohemian Rhapsody. He was fired while the movie was still being shot, yet the movie still came out looking great. Regardless, Bohemian Rhapsody is still near the bottom of the 2019 Oscar Betting odds for Best Picture.

I have to agree with Bovada Sportsbook on this one. Bohemian Rhapsody is ultimately held together by the performance of Malek. With so many incredible films on the docket for Best Picture, the winner will need to have more than just one solid performance. Anything is possible, and we might all be in for a major upset next month.

Black Panther: +1800

Black Panther has the notable distinction of being the only superhero movie to ever be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. It was extremely successful at the box office and was praised for its storyline, acting, and screenplay. This film also marked the first time a Marvel movie was filmed with a predominantly black cast.

It's not too surprising to see Black Panther nominated for Best Picture. It has everything the Academy loves. There is some stiff competition in its way here though, and not many are predicting it will actually win Best Picture.

The 2019 Oscar betting odds here reflect that. A superhero movie, even one as impressive as Black Panther, just doesn't seem likely to earn the most prestigious award in cinema. I don't recommend making this wager, but a bet on Black Panther would earn you some serious money if they win.

Vice: +6600

As soon as the trailer for Vice dropped, film experts began predicting it would be an Oscar nominee. The story focuses on former Vice President Dick Cheney and his time spent in politics. Christian Bale gave one of his best all-time performances as Cheney and support from Amy Adams and Sam Rockwell made this movie a hit.

So why is Vice so low in the 2019 Oscar betting odds? Honestly, I'm not sure. Some praised the films unique editing, while others claimed it made the movie difficult to follow.

On one hand, I find it hard to believe that a movie with just a 66% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes could win an Oscar. On the other hand, Vice has many elements that the Academy loves to see. I think throwing a few bucks on Vice winning might not be worst wager you can make this year. Just don't yell at me if I'm wrong.

  • BlacKkKlansman: +1500

Academy Award Prop Bets Available at Bovada

It's always fun to break down the nominees for cinema's most important night. Each of the Best Picture nominees was fantastic and with only a few weeks until Oscar night, it's anyone's guess which will win. Want to bet on more than just the night's winners? Allow me to break down a few of the Oscar prop bets available right now.

How Long Will the Broadcast Last?

This wager is starting at 8PM EST and ends immediately after the final acceptance speech. Typically speaking, the Oscars run about three and a half hours. With that in mind, Bovada is now allowing you to bet whether or not the award show next month goes above or below three hours and 15 minutes.

It's a little surprising for me to see the odds that the show wraps up in under 3 hours and 15 minutes as the betting favorite at -150. Viewership for the Oscars has been low in recent years, so maybe they will try to end things a little quicker than usual.

The odds that the 91st Academy Awards goes above three hours and 15 minutes are currently set at +110.

Roma

This long, black-and-white, Spanish-language drama with no big-name celebs is also one of the year's most critically acclaimed films. Roma is tied with The Favourite as the most-nominated film (10). Already, it has won:

Best
  • Golden Globes for Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film; Critics Choice Best Picture, Best Director and Best Foreign Film Awards;
  • Best Film, Best Director and Best non-English film BAFTAs
  • Directors Guild Award for Feature Film
  • AFI Special Award (the Mexican film does not qualify for its movie list)
  • Golden Lion Award at the Venice International Film Festival

It will be interesting to see if this movie can overcome the perceived Netflix bias and the fact that only 10 foreign language films have been nominated for Best Picture and none have won. However, it has momentum in its favor with its recent BAFTA victories. Plus, the DGA winner goes on to win Best Picture 77 percent of the time.

GoldDerby Odds: +400

Green Book

This film started out strong winning the People's Choice Award for its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Green Book was named Best Picture by the NBR and has already won numerous awards including a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and is listed as an AFI movie of the year. This crowd pleaser also took home the Producers Guild of America Award for Best Theatrical Motion Picture, of which seven of the last 10 winners have gone on to win a Best Picture Oscar. Despite some controversy, this film has managed to maintain its front-runner status. This is a movie older Academy voters love, but with an influx of new, younger members, it probably lacks the support to end up on top.

The Favourite

Best Picture Betting Odds 2019 Super Bowl

The Favourite is another highly nominated film, tying Roma for most Oscar nominations with 10. The movie has done well with guild nominations, won a BAFTA for Outstanding British Film and made it to the AFI Top 10 list. The star-studded cast has already won numerous awards including a Critics Choice Award for Best Ensemble. It has good chances for acting and directing awards, but taking home the Best Picture Award may be a stretch given its quirky tone.

Moneyline bet ends in tie. The money line is a three-way line between the underdog, the favorite and a draw or tie game, on this line there is no way for the wager to be a push. If the game ends up in a tie (draw), all other bets will lose regardless if they were for the favorite or the underdog. When wagering on a three-way moneyline, you can bet either Team A to win, Team B to win, or for the event to end in a tie (sometimes referred to as a ‘draw'). Naturally, three-way moneylines come into play for sports where the result may end in a tie and, as.

A Star is Born

A Star is Born was the early favorite after winning hearts and filling theaters. Bradley Cooper's romantic drama-musical has support, star power and an award-winning song that made it an American Film Institute (AFI) movie of the year. Despite being nominated in nearly every industry guild and award, the film has won no Best Picture awards of significance and is a long shot for Best Picture. It appears it is a classic case of 'peaked too soon.'

BlacKkKlansman

This film has been popular with movie guilds since it premiered at Cannes, earning it a spot as an AFI movie of the year. BlacKkKlansman has amassed a surprising number of fans and significant support, with many heralding this film as Spike Lee's best work. There is buzz that with directing and editing nominations, this may be the year Lee gets the recognition that escaped him with past nominations. The Academy tends to take advantage of opportunities to honor top artists who have no Oscars, but Lee will likely get his first in Adapted Screenplay instead of Best Picture.

Black Panther

The first superhero movie ever nominated in the Best Picture category, Black Panther is a massive box-office success. Released early last year in February, the film has managed to continue captivating audiences and critics alike. Exceeding expectations with nominations, the film made the National Board of Review (NBR) and AFI top film lists. The big-name cast has already won the Screen Actors Guild for Outstanding Cast. One can't ignore the lack of award nominations in other key categories like Directing, Acting and Editing. For Black Panther, being a superhero film nominated may be the prize.

GoldDerby Odds: +900

Bohemian Rhapsody

Opening with less than favorable reviews, Bohemian Rhapsody is a box office hit that overcame controversy to win a Golden Globe for Best Picture – Drama and accolades from the guilds. Although it was ignored by the NBR and didn't get love from the Directors Guild of America, it did make the AFI Top 10. Being nominated for the Film Editing award, which has strong ties to nominees also winning Best Picture, gives this film hope. But the continuing controversy around fired director Bryan Singer might make this film too toxic to receive top honors.

GoldDerby Odds: +950

Vice

The big-name cast meant this movie had potential. Premiering later than other nominees, Vice was absent from NBR and AFI lists. It did earn the most Golden Globes nominees (including the important Film Editing Award) and was a favorite Critics Choice nominee, too. Based on award and guild nominations and what Vice actually won, this Oscar long shot may have more merit in Christian Bale winning Best Actor than taking home Best Picture. It grabbed a ton of nominations based on hype, but once people saw the finished product, many were disappointed.
